today i was struck by the thought that every single person on this planet is doing their best to grasp control of their life in some way or another.
specifically, most conflicts that come up in my classroom happen because my kids want to be in control just as much as i do.
i'm tired of having the same ever living struggle with them! why won't they just accept the fact that they're kids, there's nothing they can do about that fact, and they're not going to be in control until they're not kids anymore!
dagnabit.
it's possible god says a similar thing about me. i'm sure he says it in a much more godly way though and i doubt he says 'dagnabit'.
the inevitable cycle of ordering our world the way we want it to be ordered seems a common denominator for most humans.
i wonder what it's like to just surrender control, in every single part of me.
how do i surrender the part of me...
...that wants to eat ice cream for breakfast?
...that makes horrible financial choices on a regular basis?
...that relates to people unlovingly?
...that is strongly discontented with teaching art to crazy little hooligans?
...that wants to be a wife and mother more than anything else?
i was talking to a friend named nick yesterday about expectations and desires and whatnot... it got me to thinking, what does it really look like to let go of expectations in my life but still hold on to hope? most of the time, i'm expecting something to definitely happen, and if it doesn't, i'm getting jipped. (obviously. i should get what i want.)
holding on to hope, on the other hand, is recognizing the good desires behind the expectation, knowing they come from god, and trusting his goodness to provide what he knows is beneficial for me, whatever that may or may not include.
so in the list of things i wish i could surrender, the desires behind those control struggles are something like this:
...i desire good flavors
...i desire wisdom, along with strength of character to act on that wisdom
...i desire to love and be loved
...i desire a sense of purpose
the part i'm stuck on though is, yes, god created those desires and they're good desires. but what do we honestly do when he chooses not to fulfill them? how do we really hold on to the hope of his good character when evidence seems to point in an opposite direction?
is that just a job for the holy spirit, or am i missing something i should be knowing here?

oh yah! i've been having similar thoughts of late...sorry to say i don't have an answer either...but i will continue to search the Word and the Lord for the answer...
thanks for your comment to my latest tirade :)
I guess...Stay close to God, be available to Him, be alert to His leading, do what you know to be right in the meantime...know folks are praying for ya...all of which sounds a bit like "relax harder" I'm afraid. :-)
You've struck on the fundamental problem of man. We all want to be God and that's waht gets us in all these messes that we find ourselves in. You nailed it. As far as hope goes I think it's learning to be like Abraham. He hoped against hope. He believed that what God said was true even though he never saw the fulfillment of most of God's promises in his lifetime. That's the kind of faith I want to have. I want to choose to hang on to what God says is true even when all evidence points to the contrary.
God reminds me over and over...the answer is really simple...ready? Drop the rope. The "tug-of-war" immediately stops and God wins. Which in the long run, means you win!
To be where God wants me to be
when He wants me to be there
how He wants me to be there
with whom He wants me to be there.
Drop the rope...instantaneous win-win.
Love you, understand where you are coming from, and praying for you,
Aunt Robin
I don't think He would give you those desires if He had no intentions of fulfilling them in you. You said yourself that you feel like those are the desires are from God. He has a plan... We just have to trust it. It's so simple, it's hard - some days it's impossible. I also liked what your Aunt Robin said about the game of tug-of-war. I'm really going to take that to heart... Just be careful that you're giving Him the rope, and that you're not just giving up.
Love ya, Miss Kate!
Kate, you have such an amazing way with words. You should probably become an author someday. But seriously, I really relate to your issues, ponderings and concerns. I feel like there is so much going on in my own life right now, yet I can't seem to get it going. Strange thought, but hey, that's me. Well, I'm just writing to you to tell you that I like you, respect you, and hope God blesses you in a huge way in this season of your life.
hey Kate...i'm ready for another hair cut, when can you come?
whatever! i'll only write the book if i can co-write it with you. thanks for the props and allow me to say that was a nice little piece you just did...as if contemplatively chewing a premium-cut steak sirloin, your tho'ts give a guy a lot to ponder in his own life. i enjoy weighty and/or meaningful conversations like that with my friends...and i miss them.
Please have a very Merry Christmas wherever you are :)
